Glencore
CTSCo
Glencore's CTSCo initiative in Queensland envisioned capturing CO₂ emissions from the Millmerran coal-fired power station, transporting them, and injecting the CO₂ into deep geological formations beneath southern Queensland. The project aimed to store around 110,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and served as a potential stepping stone toward a larger industrial-scale CCS hub in the Surat Basin. In May 2024, the Queensland government rejected the project's environmental impact statement, citing risks of groundwater contamination in the Great Artesian Basin—particularly concerns about CO₂ migration and the potential release of contaminants like arsenic and lead. As a result, CTSCo was deemed unsuitable to proceed, effectively barring not only this proposal but signaling a broader ban on similar CCS projects in the region.
