California Resources Corp / Carbon TerraVault
CTV II
The Carbon TerraVault II (CTV II) project is located in the Sacramento Basin near Stockton, California, and will repurpose the Union Island Gas Field, which historically produced nearly 300 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Targeting the Winters Formation at depths of about 9,500 feet, the project will use five injection wells supported by monitoring systems to store CO₂ from direct air capture and industrial sources. The site is designed to sequester up to 0.97 million tonnes of CO₂ annually for 23.5 years, totaling more than 22 million tonnes. The Winters Formation offers high porosity and permeability, while the overlying Sawtooth and Starkey Shales provide secure geologic containment. With strong reservoir data, seismic surveys, and corrective action plans addressing legacy wells, CTV II is positioned as a key storage hub in northern California.
