Carbon America
Denova
Carbon America is developing one of Colorado's first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems at the Yuma and Sterling Ethanol plants. These projects will capture approximately 350,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year by capturing more than 95% of emissions released during ethanol fermentation. The captured CO₂ is then transported via underground pipeline to a deep geologic storage site located over 4,000 feet below ground. To validate the sequestration site, drilling of a geologic sampling well was completed in May 2023 on state-owned land about 10 miles southwest of the Yuma plant. Data collected from well logs, core samples, and fluid tests will assess subsurface characteristics to ensure compliance with EPA Class VI permit requirements. Carbon America intends to finance, build, own, and operate the full CCS system, including capture, transport, injection, and long-term monitoring.
