Gulf Coast Sequestration
Goose Lake
The Goose Lake CCS Project, led by Gulf Coast Sequestration, LLC (GCS), is located in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, north of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The project will begin with two injection wells—Goose Lake CCS Well No. 001 (GL CCS 1) and Goose Lake CCS Well No. 002 (GL CCS 2)—targeting the upper Frio Formation for permanent CO₂ storage. GCS has partnered with local landowners to secure long-term site access and will source CO₂ primarily from regional emitters in the Lake Charles, LA, and Beaumont, TX industrial corridors, where over 36 million metric tons (MMT) of CO₂ were emitted in 2023. The captured CO₂ stream is expected to come from natural gas processing, LNG facilities, and blue hydrogen production, with high-purity specifications aligned with existing Gulf Coast pipeline networks. The facility is designed for a 15-year injection period, sequestering about 2.0 MMT of CO₂ annually for a total of 30.1 MMT. GL CCS 1 is expected to store ~7.4 MMT, while GL CCS 2 will store ~22.7 MMT over the project life. The overall project timeline spans 94 years, including 4 years of permitting and construction, 15 years of active injection, and a 70-year post-injection site care (PISC) phase. Extensive site characterization, geomechanical studies, seismic risk assessments, and monitoring plans have been completed to demonstrate long-term storage security and regulatory compliance.
