L09

Shell Offshore Carbon Storage Netherlands (SOCS NL) is developing the L09 CO₂ storage project in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, approximately 90 km offshore and ~28 km northwest of Terschelling. The project will store CO₂ in depleted gas reservoirs within the L09-FF and L09-FD formations at depths of roughly 2.7–3.2 km. CO₂ will be transported via the Aramis CCS network and delivered to a նոր offshore injection platform (L09-FF-2), which will be connected to the Aramis distribution hub by a subsea pipeline. The development concept includes the installation of a new unmanned injection platform and the drilling of four injection wells, with two additional well slots available for contingency. Injection is expected to average approximately 3–4 million tonnes per year, resulting in a total storage capacity of 56–67 million tonnes over an injection period of 15–25 years. CO₂ will be injected in dense phase into multiple depleted gas fields within the L09 block, leveraging existing geological traps with proven seal integrity, including caprock, fault boundaries, and salt structures. The project is designed as a greenfield CO₂ storage development rather than reusing existing gas infrastructure, with dedicated facilities optimized for injection operations. The platform will operate remotely from shore and rely primarily on wind and solar power, with backup generation as needed. First injection is targeted for the 2033–2035 timeframe, positioning L09 as a key expansion of the Aramis CCS system and a material contributor to large-scale CO₂ storage capacity in the Netherlands.
