MOL Szank Field
The Szank Field CO₂-EOR project is located in southern Hungary within the Pannonian Basin, and is operated by MOL Group as part of its carbon management and enhanced recovery initiatives. The field produces from mature hydrocarbon reservoirs developed within Miocene-age sedimentary sequences consisting primarily of sandstone and carbonate intervals typical of the basin’s extensional structural setting. After primary production and secondary recovery phases, MOL implemented CO₂ injection to improve recovery efficiency by mobilizing residual oil through miscible or near-miscible displacement processes. CO₂ utilized for injection is sourced from industrial operations and transported to the field through regional infrastructure before distribution to injection wells. Pattern-based injection strategies, commonly incorporating water-alternating-gas (WAG) cycles, are used to manage mobility and improve sweep efficiency within heterogeneous reservoir units. Produced fluids are processed at surface facilities where CO₂ is separated, recompressed, and recycled for reinjection, while retained volumes contribute to long-term geologic storage through structural trapping, residual trapping, and dissolution within formation fluids. The Szank project represents one of Central Europe’s earlier industrial CO₂ utilization efforts, combining tertiary oil recovery with monitored CO₂ storage to extend field life and reduce operational emissions.
