Snowy River Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Project

The Snowy River Carbon Storage Project is a Class VI CO₂ geologic sequestration project proposed by Denbury Carbon Solutions in Carter County, southeastern Montana. The project is designed to permanently store CO₂ transported via Denbury’s existing Cedar Creek Anticline (CCA) CO₂ Pipeline, a 105-mile system that currently moves CO₂ from the Bell Creek Oil Field to enhanced oil recovery operations in Fallon County. The Snowy River project would repurpose this infrastructure to support long-term geologic storage, utilizing approximately 100,200 acres of federally managed underground pore space administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), along with about 500 acres of surface disturbance for well pads, access roads, pipelines, and two pump stations. The proposed facilities would operate under a 30-year right-of-way term, with injection wells regulated under EPA’s UIC Class VI program. The project includes multiple planned Class VI injection wells, beginning with a stratigraphic test well (Well #3) on State of Montana land to collect geologic and hydrologic data needed to support Class VI permitting. CO₂ would be injected into deep saline storage formations beneath the project area, with injection pressures, well construction, monitoring, and post-closure care governed by the most stringent UIC standards to protect underground sources of drinking water. In July 2025, the BLM issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the initial access right-of-way to the test well, determining that the proposed activities would not significantly affect environmental, cultural, or water resources. The Snowy River project represents a key step in Denbury’s strategy to transition its CO₂ pipeline network from EOR toward dedicated, large-scale carbon sequestration in the northern Rocky Mountain region.
