NexGen Carbon Oklahoma
Vanguard CCS Hub
The Vanguard CCS Hub, developed by NexGen Carbon Oklahoma, LLC (a joint venture of NexGen Carbon Solutions and Prairie Carbon Solutions), is located in Osage County, northeastern Oklahoma. Phase 1 of the project covers ~75,000 acres of storage leases with an Area of Review (AoR) of about 137 square miles. The development plan includes 10 CO₂ injection wells, supported by 10 above-zone and 7 in-zone monitoring wells, alongside extensive CO₂ pipeline infrastructure and capture facilities connected to nearby industrial emitters in refining, fertilizer, and cement manufacturing. Injection will target the upper and middle Arbuckle Group, a thick (~950 ft) carbonate interval with dissolution-enhanced porosity and permeability. The Arbuckle is underlain by granitic basement and sealed by multiple confining units including the Simpson Group shales, Devonian Woodford Shale, and Mississippian Limestone, with additional Pennsylvanian shales providing tertiary containment. Phase 1 is designed for a 20-year injection period beginning around 2028, storing up to 71 million metric tons (MMt) of CO₂ at a collective rate of 3.5 MMt per year. Each injection well is planned for a maximum of 18 MMcf/d (~350,000 tonnes/year).
