Louisiana Green Fuels Columbia

The Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) Port of Columbia Project, developed by Strategic Biofuels, is a renewable fuels and carbon sequestration project in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. The project integrates a biorefinery with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), targeting deep geologic storage of approximately 1.36 million metric tons of CO₂ annually from both the renewable fuel facility and its adjacent biomass power plant. The sequestration complex is designed around three Class VI injection wells (W-N1, W-N2, and W-S2), injecting into the Upper Tuscaloosa and Paluxy Formations, with thick, regionally extensive confining zones including the Austin Chalk Equivalent and Midway Shale. A stratigraphic test well drilled in 2021 confirmed storage suitability. Monitoring will be conducted through converted stratigraphic and legacy wells, along with above-zone and USDW monitoring wells, providing a robust system for long-term verification. On the fuels side, the LGF biorefinery will produce 32 million gallons per year of renewable fuels—primarily sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)—from regional forestry waste. A full life-cycle analysis indicates a carbon intensity (CI) of -294 gCO₂e/MJ, one of the lowest recorded for any renewable fuel plant globally. Construction is expected to begin after a Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2025, with first fuel and CO₂ injection targeted for early 2027.
