Western Nebraska Sequestration Hub
The Western Nebraska Sequestration Hub (Conestoga I-1 Project), developed by Tallgrass High Plains Carbon Storage, LLC, is a Class VI carbon storage project located in Kimball County, Nebraska. It will inject captured CO₂ into the Lyons Formation, a deep sandstone reservoir with high porosity and permeability that ensures CO₂ remains in a supercritical state. The Lyons is overlain by the Goose Egg and Satanka formations, both low-permeability shale and evaporite layers that provide strong vertical containment. Extensive geologic and seismic evaluations confirm the area is structurally stable, with no faults or fractures that could compromise storage integrity. The Project’s injection phase is currently planned for 21 years, with individual wells expected to operate for 7 to 20 years. A total of 129.4 million metric tons (Mt) of CO2 is planned to be sequestered across the seven wells, with individual well totals ranging from approximately 10.4 to 27.9 Mt, averaging approximately 18.5 Mt per well. The anticipated Project-level average injection rate over the 21-year period is approximately 6.2 Mta, while planned well-level average injection rates range from 0.9 to 1.5 Mta.
