River Parish Sequestration
River Parish Sequestration LLC is developing the River Parish Sequestration Project (RPS Project) as a large scale CO2 transportation and geologic storage solution serving the Louisiana Chemical Corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, one of the most concentrated industrial emissions regions in the United States. The project area is adjacent to more than 50 existing industrial facilities that collectively emit approximately 60 million metric tons of CO2 per year. The RPS Project is designed to support three Class VI injection wells with a combined storage capacity of approximately 176 million metric tons of CO2 over a 30 year injection period, creating a long life regional storage hub for hard to abate industrial sources. Project development includes advanced site characterization and permitting activities, such as completion of an aerial magnetic survey to identify legacy wells and other artificial penetrations, and the permitting drilling and injection testing of a stratigraphic test well to confirm reservoir and confining zone performance. In parallel, River Parish Sequestration is completing a front end engineering and design study for the RPS Pipeline System, which will transport captured CO2 from nearby industrial emitters to the sequestration complex. Permitting efforts are now advancing, with the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources releasing a draft UIC Class VI permit for one of the RPS injection wells, marking a significant regulatory milestone and reflecting the state’s newly assumed Class VI primacy. The project is supported by $25.6 million in US Department of Energy funding, alongside $6.4 million in non federal cost share, for a total project value of approximately $32.0 million, and represents one of the most advanced CCS hub developments currently underway in Louisiana. RPS signed a binding CO2 Offtake and Storage Agreement (COSA) with ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions Onshore Storage LLC (ExxonMobil) whereby RPS is obligated to transport and sequester at least 850,000 metric tons and up to 4,000,000 metric tons of Captured CO2 per year supplied by ExxonMobil.
